The Press Subsidies Council (Presstödsnämnden) is a governmental organisation whose task is to safeguard the diversity of the daily newspaper market. It carries out its function by distributing the state's subsidy to the daily press.
The subsidy to the daily press is of two kinds - an operational subsidy and a distribution subsidy. The operational subsidy is given to daily newspapers that are the secondary paper in the place where they are published. Around 80 daily papers currently receive an operational subsidy. The operational subsidy amounts to over 483 million kronor a year. The distribution subsidy is paid to daily papers that take part in organised common distribution. 137 daily papers receive a distribution subsidy for a combined edition of 800 million copies.
